Philosophy
At the Sargent Center, we believe in the social and emotional well-being of all our students. Our team provides our students with empirically-based social skill programs tailored to meet their individual needs. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs include group lessons as well as individual counseling sessions with teachers and staff that help to reinforce the following SEL standards: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Understanding emotions and learning coping strategies is central to our lessons.
Approach
Evaluations play an important role in understanding a student's strengths and areas of need. Our evaluation process includes a comprehensive view of the student’s social and emotional skills. These results inform the development of a high-quality Individual Education Plan (IEP), which serves as a customized roadmap for the student's interventions, supports, and accommodations. We offer consultations to teachers, staff, outside providers, and parents to address individual student needs.
Our lessons address the following areas:
- Understanding Emotions
- Learning Coping Strategies
- Self-awareness
- Self-management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-making
